"1) New Blood For The Industry - The music industry was creatively at its best when the pioneers of the business (Berry Gordy, Ahmet Ertegen, Mo Ostin, Jac Holzman, etc.) were actively running their companies. They were fans first, businessmen second, and they intimately knew their audience well because they were part of it.

Everything changed in the 80’s when the increasing music industry revenue became so attractive that these entrepreneurs were bought out by multi-national corporations. From that point on, the quarterly bottom line was king, not the music. Where previously a label could wait as many as 4 or even 5 albums for an artist to break (as in the case of David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Fleetwood Mac and Red Hot Chili Peppers among others), soon the policy became one and done if sales were not immediately up to expectations. To make matters worse, MTV became a primary music promotional tool, so the development cycle soon spun around image, rather than music, which further depressed creativity.

But that’s beginning to change as we witness a big shakeout in the music industry right before our very eyes. With the music industry no longer the cash cow that it was, the big business that controls the industry will soon drop away, as will the old guard who ran it. In their place will be a new crop of music entrepreneurs who, like their early predecessors, love the music that they sell just as much as their customers do. They’ll nurture talent because they believe in them, just like before, and music will become vital and exciting again, and with that, will come back healthier (though probably not as profitable) than ever."

RIP rock'n'roll?

Nudne. Słyszeliśmy to już tysiące razy. Rock umarł.

Nie chodzi o to, że nic ciekawego się już w tej materii nie pojawia (chociaż to osobny temat). Chodzi o to, że muzyka rockowa nie jest już siłą napędową branży muzycznej. Warto spojrzeć na statystyki:

Last year saw the number of rock songs in the singles chart fall to its lowest level in half a century, with only three tracks appearing in the top 100 best-selling hits in the UK.

The percentage of rock songs plummeted from a sickly 13% in 2009 to a terminal 3% – far behind hip-hop/R'n'B at 47%, pop at 40% and dance 10%, according to figures from MusicWeek.

(...)There are rock acts still doing well, but it is the old guard: there is now, it seems, little new in rock. Bon Jovi was the highest grossing live act of 2010, bringing in $201.1m (£130.7m) in world ticket sales. However, its frontman is 48, and according to a report by Deloitte, 40% of the frontmen of the top 20 highest-grossing live acts in the US will be 60 or over next year; almost one in five acts will be over 50.

Orędzie Natalii Fiedorczuk

Natalia Fiedorczuk jest artystką znakomitą. Wszystko, czego się tknie, zamienia się w złoto, a jej wkładu w rodzimą scenę indie nie sposób nie docenić. Nie jest artystką od wczoraj, i nie wątpię w jej znajomość branży. Jednak jej felieton o stanie branży muzycznej pozostawia mnie w ogromnym niesmakiem w ustach.

"W sprawie rynku - porzućcie wszelką nadzieję. Powiedzmy, macie zespół, albo gracie piosenki solo i nagrywacie je na ośmioślad. Albo na garaż bend. Albo macie "projekt", bo to też modne mieć projekt, najlepiej taki, w którym jest jeszcze gostek od wizualizacji (scenografii, kostiumów, tancerz Butoh - niepotrzebne skreślić). Paru znajomych mówi Wam, że kurde ej masz talent. Kolega pomógł zorganizować pierwszy koncert, inny kolega będzie menadżerem, dziewczyna patrzy z zachwytem. Nagle zaczynasz/zaczynacie myśleć: To ma sens, w sumie to chyba jestem do tego stworzony/a, na komunii śpiewałam psalm, coraz lepiej idzie mi granie solówek, w ankietach i formularzach już waham się przy wpisywaniu zawodu. Może... muzyk?"
